Writer of the first Grail romance, Le Roman de Perceval (AD 1188). De Troyes’ story takes place in France and the hero, Perceval, is referred to as the “son of the widow.” Perceval meets the mysterious Fisher King, and while sleeping in the King’s castle he is visited by a dream of the grail being carried by a woman. The grail is never described as a cup. Perceval later discovers he is a member of the “Grail Family,” and that the Fisher King is his uncle. Chretien died before he completed Le Roman. See Holy Grail.
