A Merovingian king, assassinated by usurpers in AD 679. Buried in the chapel of St. Rémy at Stenay, his remains were said to have protected the vicinity of the church from Viking incursions, for which Dagobert was sainted. His feast day is December 23rd, the day on which he was murdered. Although Merovingian kings continued to rule for another century or so after his assassination, Dagobert II was the last of the main branch of the house – all subsequent rulers were of cadet branches. See Merovingian Dynasty, Pepin D’Heristal.
