Bergers D’Arcadie, Les

In English, “The Shepherds of Arcadia.” The title of a painting by Nicholas Poussin, created c. 1640-1642. Les Bergers depicts four shepherds congregating around a tomb bearing the inscription “Et in Arcadia Ego”. Louis XIV spent 20 years trying to acquire this painting after Poussin’s death in 1665. When he finally succeeded, he locked Les Bergers in his private chambers and allowed no one to see it.
